Eleanor McEvoy was born on Dublin’s northside. After college, she pursued a career as a session musician in Dublin, collaborating with a multitude of artists and groups including U2, Sinead O’Connor, Midge Ure and Mary Black.
She got her first big break in 1992 as the composer, producer and co-performer (with Mary Black) of A Woman's Heart, the title track for the best-selling Irish album in Irish history. The song continuously makes appearances on screen, most recently in 2019 in the award-winning TV show Derry Girls.
Her song Sophie was described by David Smith in The Guardian as “an anthem that is touching, inspiring and consoling thousands of anorexic girls around the world”. It is used internationally in treatment centres to treat patients with eating disorders.
Her sixteenth album Gimme Some Wine received enthusiastic acclaim on its release, featuring co-writes with legendary Irish songwriter Paul Brady and UK-based Dave Rotheray of The Beautiful South.

Eleanor McEvoy graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an honours degree in music and worked as a violinist in the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra for five years before taking the plunge to leave the classical world behind to concentrate on her real passion—song-writing.
In 1992, her song ‘A Woman’s Heart’ was the title track for the ‘A Woman’s Heart’ anthology album. ‘A Woman’s Heart’ has since gone on to become the best-selling Irish album in Irish history and in April 2019 was shortlisted to the top 10 in the search for RTE’s Ireland’s Favourite Folk Song.
Her eponymous debut album was released by Geffen records in LA in 1993, this was followed with tours in the USA, Europe and the Far East. She moved to Columbia Records in New York for her second album ‘What’s Following Me?’, the first single, ‘Precious Little’ was a top ten radio hit in the USA.
Since then, Eleanor has gone on to become an artist and performer known throughout the world. She has had numerous cover versions of her songs by performers such as Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, Phil Coulter, Bel

Eleanor McEvoy is the 1993 studio album debut of Eleanor McEvoy, released on Geffen Records. International radio hits followed with the release of the two main singles "A Woman's Heart" and "Apologize." The former track had originally gained fame (in a different recording with Mary Black) as the title track for A Woman's Heart, the biggest-selling Irish album in Irish history.[1]
McEvoy toured the United States, Europe and the Far East in support of the album and racked up international sales of over 250,000 copies. Hot Press, Ireland's premier music magazine, named her Best Solo Performer in 1992 and Best Songwriter in 1993 and placed the album amongst the top debuts of that year.[2]
