Pari Khan Khanum was born in 1548 to Shah Tahmasp and his consort Sultan-Agha Khanum. She was raised in a unique way for women at the time in what is now modern-day Iran, being well-educated in the Islamic sciences, such as law, jurisprudence, and poetry. Contemporary chronicles praised her superior intelligence and sharp insights, both of which, along with her birth and lineage, helped her to achieve a higher social status and political power.

At a young age, she was engaged to Prince Badi’al-Zaman, the appointed governor of Sistan, but the pair never married. Instead, Pari Khan Khanum took on a political role during her father’s reign, helping him to rule during his last years of illness. She persuaded him to undertake charitable acts and was herself known as a benefactor for the poor.

Farida Khanum (Urdu: فرِیدہ خانُم) is a Pakistaniclassical singer[broken anchor]. She is also known by her honorific title Malika-e-Ghazal (The Queen of Ghazal) in both Pakistan and India[2] and is widely regarded as one of the greatest exponents of the ghazal genre of singing.[3][4] Khanum has been affectionately called Queen of Ghazal in Pakistan.

Early life

Khanum was born in 1929 in Amritsar, British India, into a Punjabi Muslim family.[5] She had four siblings — a sister and three brothers. Her sister is the famous singer, Mukhtar Begum. Their entire family moved from Amritsar, Punjab, to Lahore, Pakistan, when she was 18 years old.[6][7]

Farida Khanum is a renowned Pakistani Ghazal singer. Farida Khanum has been given the title "Malika-e-Ghazal" (Queen of Ghazal) in tribute to her singing talents. Farida Khanum lives in Lahore, Punjab and performs at select musical gatherings. In 2005, she was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Pakistan's highest civilian honors) by President Pervaiz Musharraf.

Her family was from Punjab. Farida Khanum born in Calcutta and raised in Amritsar. She migrated to Pakistan after independence in 1947. Her sister Mukhtar Begum and the renowned maestro of Patiala Gharana, Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan trained her in initial years. She usually sticks to classical Raagas and minimalist accompaniment.
