Jermaine Dupri Mauldin (born September 23, 1972) is an American rapper and record producer.[4][5] Raised in Atlanta, Georgia as the son of Columbia Records executive Michael Mauldin, he began his career in music production at the age of nine. He discovered the teen hip-hop duo Kris Kross in 1991. Dupri wrote and produced their 1992 single "Jump," which peaked atop the Billboard Hot 100 and was named the 23rd most successful song of that decade. He established his own record label, So So Def Recordings, in a joint venture with Columbia the following year.
Dupri has since signed artists including Xscape, Bow Wow, Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Dem Franchize Boyz, YoungBloodZ, and Anthony Hamilton to the label. Meanwhile, he worked with Mariah Carey, Usher, Monica, and Nelly to produce a total of 11 chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Jermaine Dupri achieved enormous commercial success before the age of twenty as a songwriter and producer for the teen rap group Kris Kross. He went on to found the So So Def record label in 1992, and the Grammy Award–winner has since become known as one of the top music producers in the country for pop, rhythm and blues (R&B), and rap acts.
Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was born on September 23, 1972, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Tina and Michael Mauldin. He grew up in the College Park community of Atlanta. Dupri was introduced to the music business at an early age by his father, then a fast-rising concert promoter and manager of rap and R&B groups. His career as a performer began at age twelve, when he started a three-year stint as a breakdancer with the New York–based rap group Whodini at the annual New York City Fresh Festival. Through Whodini he became associated with a female singing duo called Silk Tymes Leather, for whom he produced an album in 1989.

After discovering rap duo Kris Kross at an Atlanta mall in 1991, then-19-year-old producer Jermaine Dupri helped write their massive single “Jump,” and “Warm It Up,” which he wrote by himself—with both songs appearing on their 1992 multi-platinum album Totally Krossed Out. Since then, he has established his So So Def Recordings record label (its roster has included Kris Kross, Bow Wow, TLC and Usher) and contributed to songs recorded by Lil’ Kim (“Not Tonight”), Xscape (“Just Kickin’ It”), Da Brat (“Funkdified”), Destiny’s Child (“With Me,” on which he was also featured), Bow Wow (“Let Me Hold You”) and most notably, Usher (“You Make Me Wanna,” “Nice & Slow,” “My Way,” “Burn,” “Confessions Part II” and "My Boo”) and Mariah Carey (“Always Be My Baby” and the smash hit “We Belong Together).”
