SULTAN YOUSUF BIN TASFEN Yusuf ibn Tashfin also, Tashafin, or Teshufin; or Yusuf; (Full name: Yûsuf bnu Tâšfîn Nâçereddîn bnu Tâlâkâkîn aç-Çanhâjî, Arabic: يوسف بن تاشفين ناصر الدين بن تالاكاكين الصنهاجي ; reigned c. 1061 – 1106) was leader of the Moroccan Almoravid empire. He co-founded the city of Marrakech and led the Muslim forces in the Battle of Zallaqa/Sagrajas. Ibn Tashfin came to al-Andalus from Africa to help the Muslims fight against Alfonso VI, eventually achieving victory and promoting an Islamic system in the region. He was married to Zainab al-Nafzawiyya, who he reportedly trusted politically. Yusuf ibn Tashfin emerged from a line of Berber military leaders. Abu Bakr ibn Umar, a natural leader of Lamtuna extraction, a branch of the Branès, one of the original disciples of ibn Yasin who served as a spiritual liaison for followers of the Maliki school of thought, was appointed general after the death of his brother Yahya ibn Ibrahim. Shahzada Hayder Ali was the grandson of Hyder Ali and the eldest son of Tipu Sultan.[citation needed]
After the fall of Srirangapattana and death of Tipu Sultan on 4 May 1799, Shezada Hyder Ali and other family members were sent to the Vellore fort on 19 June 1799 and kept under custody of the East India Company. Shezada Hyder Ali managed to escape.
On July 10, 1806, at the marriage of one of Tipu Sultan's daughters at the Vellore fort, Indian soldiers staged a revolt known as the Vellore Mutiny, opening fire in the fort (mandapam), killing several army officers and taking control of the fort's arms and ammunition. They pulled down the Union Jack flag, hoisted the Royal Tiger Flag of Tipu Sultan in its stead, and declared Shezada Hyder Ali as their king.[1] However, they failed to close the gates of the fort securely, and a British officer escaped and alerted the garrison in Arcot. Tipu Sultan (Kannada: ಟಿಪ್ಪು ಸುಲ್ತಾನ್, Urdu: سلطان فتح علی خان ٹیپو ) (November 1750, Devanahalli – 4 May 1799, Srirangapattana), also known as the Tiger of Mysore, was the de facto ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. He was the son of Hyder Ali, at that time an officer in the Mysorean army, and his second wife, Fatima or Fakhr-un-nissa. His full name was Sultan Fateh Ali Khan Shahab, Tipu Saheb or Bahadur Khan Tipu Sultan.
During Tipu's childhood, his father rose to take power in Mysore, and Tipu took over rule of the kingdom upon his father's death. In addition to his role as ruler, he was a scholar, soldier, and poet. He was a devout Muslim but the majority of his subjects were Hindus.
