Margaret Kenyatta (1928-2017)

Margaret Wambui Kenyatta was born on 16 of February 1928 in Nairobi. She was sister to Peter Muigai Kenyatta and daughter to Grace Wahu and the first President of the Republic of Kenya, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. Margaret was educated at Alliance High school in Kikuyu and later on went to Kenya Teachers Training College in Githunguri, 1948-52. She worked as a telephone operator and bookkeeper, before joining KANU on its formation in 1960. Margaret was then elected as KANU Kiambu branch Assistant Secretary and later Secretary, serving from 1961 to 1962. During the period, she also doubled up as a Women’s Wing Leader and Chairperson for Kenya Women’s Seminar. In 1963, she was elected to Nairobi City Council as a councillor representing Dagoretti.

Margaret Gakuo Kenyatta (born 8 April 1964) is a Kenyan educator who served as First Lady of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. She is the wife of Uhuru Kenyatta, the immediate former Kenyan president.

Biography

Margaret Wanjiru Gakuo was born on 8 April 1964 to a Kenyan father, Njuguna Gakuo, a former director of the Kenya Railways Corporation, and a German mother, Magdalena.^[1] She attended Kianda School, St. Andrews School in Molo, Kenya, and received a Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University.^[1]

Her Excellency Mrs. Rachel Ruto is the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya.

She is a thought leader on the Environment and Climate Action, Financial inclusion and Women Empowerment.

She is the Founder and Patron of Mama Doing Good and a champion of Faith Diplomacy, Mental Health and Wellness.

In 2009, Her Excellency, founded Joyful Women Organization, an initiative to financially empower rural women.

Mrs Ruto has received various awards notably, the State Commendation Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH).

In 2014, she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship for Women Empowerment by Binary University of Malaysia.

Her Excellency was appointed by the African Union Commission and the World Economic Forum as one of the high-level Champions of the AU Decade on Women Economic Empowerment and Financial Inclusion in 2021.

Prior to her public service roles, the First Lady was an entrepreneur in the travel, hospitality and agricultural industries.
