Marita Zuraitis was named president and CEO-elect of Horace Mann Educators Corp. of Springfield in April. Following a transition, she succeeded Peter Heckman on Sept. 19 and was elected to the company board.
Zuraitis, a 53-year-old native of Watertown, Conn., heads the only large, publicly traded company based in Springfield, with 2012 revenue of just over $1 billion. She is the first woman to be named chief executive in Horace Mann's 68-year history.
The insurance and financial services company is one of Springfield's largest employers, with a local workforce of 1,077 and 1,513 nationwide.
Prior to joining Horace Mann, Zuraitis was an executive vice president at The Hanover Insurance Group. Her 30-year insurance career includes work at The St. Paul Travelers Companies, where she became president and CEO of commercial lines.
She also held underwriting and field-management positions with USF&G, and Aetna Life and Casualty.
