When Leo B. Lambert was born on 16 August 1895, in Trask, Jefferson Township, Grant, Indiana, United States, his father, James M Lambert, was 38 and his mother, Cynthia Bragg, was 36. He married Ruby Eugenia Losey on 16 August 1916, in Hamilton, Sullivan, Tennessee, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. He lived in East Chicago, North Township, Lake, Indiana, United States in 1920 and South Pittsburg, Marion, Tennessee, United States in 1940. He died on 21 February 1950, in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee, United States, at the age of 54, and was buried in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee, United States.

Leo M. Lambert is a professor and president emeritus of Elon University, where he served as president from 1999-2018. During his tenure as president, Lambert led two, ten-year strategic plans that transformed the university. A chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the U.S., was established at Elon in 2010 following major investments in arts and sciences programs, world languages, honors, and support for faculty scholarship. Elon’s professional schools of business, law, health sciences, communications and education also achieved top accreditations and distinctions during his presidency. Today Elon is recognized widely for excellence in experiential learning, including its programs in study abroad, undergraduate research, civic engagement and interfaith cooperation. More than 100 buildings were added to Elon’s campus during Lambert’s presidency. Leo Lambert led Elon in building a national reputation for academic excellence across the curriculum, including the sheltering of a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, and for its innovative programs in study abroad, undergraduate research, leadership, interfaith dialogue, civic engagement and community service, and preparing students for meaningful careers and advanced study.
Elon’s campus grew tremendously during Lambert’s presidency. More than 100 new buildings were added, including major investments in the residential campus, building four major neighborhoods, integrating academic and residence life programs and nurturing a flourishing intellectual climate.
Lambert was a strong advocate for increasing access to higher education for students with high financial need and created the Odyssey Scholars program (for undergraduates attending Elon) and the Elon Academy (to support local high school students in gaining access to higher education).
