Before she died in 2018 at the age of 69, Superman actor Margot Kidder told her friends her final wish. If they ever find her body, keep her death a secret. Wrap her in a bedsheet, take her to the forest outside her home in the mountains of Livingston, Montana, and leave her for the wolves. Kidder loved those wolves, regularly feeding them from her back porch. Kidder’s friends, understandably, didn’t abide by her request. But there would have been something oddly fitting about this fate – Hollywood’s wildest movie star, at least for a few years in the Seventies, vanishing into the mysterious recesses of the Montana woods, never to be seen again.

Margot Kidder was born Margaret Ruth Kidder in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, to Jocelyn Mary "Jill" (Wilson), a history teacher from British Columbia, and Kendall Kidder, a New Mexico-born mining engineer and explosives expert. Margot was a delightful child who took pride in everything she did. At an early age, she became aware of the great emotions she felt towards expressing herself, and caught the acting bug. As a child, she wrote in a diary that she wanted to become a movie star, and that one day it would happen, but she had to overcome something else first. She was aware that she was constantly facing mood swings, but didn't know why. At odd times, she would try to kill herself - the first time was at age 14 - but the next day she would be just fine. Her father's hectic schedule and moving around so much didn't help matters, either, causing her to attend 11 schools in 12 years. Kidder began her career in her native Canada appearing in small independent films and on Canadian television series, before being cast opposite Beau Bridges in the period comedy Gaily, Gaily (1969). She subsequently starred opposite Gene Wilder in Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx (1970), and in 1972 she had a role in the movie The Bounty Man with Clint Walker, followed by a dual lead role in Brian De Palma's cult thriller film Sisters (1972), and a supporting part in the slasher filmBlack Christmas (1974). The following year, she co-starred with Robert Redford in the drama The Great Waldo Pepper.
Kidder came to mainstream recognition for her iconic role as Lois Lane in Richard Donner's Superman (1978); she would go on to reprise the role in the film's following three sequels.
