Hiroshige, Utagawa – Odawara, the Sakawa River (S3483)
This is no 10 in the series. It depicts the crossing of the Sakai River. The Sakawa River flows through the flourishing town of Odawara, whose castle is seen at the foot of the mountains of Hakone in the distance. Some travelers are carried across the river on a litter. Hiroshige made changes to several of the designs which had been published already, probably due to the loss of key blocks by fire or the request by the publisher. The first version of “Odawara” showed striking, multi-colored distant mountains somewhat similar to those in “Hakone” print. The fore ground has less people. The first version is rarely seen on market.
Format is Oban yoko-e.This is a later edition from recarved blocks. No flaws or problems of note. Sheet size is 14.5″x10″. Provenance: from Hi-bid seller Quinn’s Auction Galleries of Falls Church, VA.
