Stephan Bodian is a teacher, writer, licensed psychotherapist, and former Zen monk who has been illuminating the path to spiritual awakening for more than forty years. His approach integrates Eastern and Western elements with his own direct experience. He is the founder and director of the School for Awakening, a five-month intensive program of teachings, self-inquiry, meditation, and exploration into the nature of reality. Bodian authored Meditation for Dummies, the seminal text that introduced meditation to the masses. About Stephan Bodian
Stephan offers webinars, retreats, videos, books, and spiritual counseling that make profound spiritual teachings and practices accessible to a global audience. He studied and practiced for many years with great masters in the nondual wisdom traditions of Zen, Dzogchen-Mahamudra, and Advaita Vedanta, and in 2001 he received Dharma transmission (authorization to teach) from Adyashanti.
His ground-breaking guidebook Meditation for Dummies, which has sold nearly a half million copies in a half dozen languages since its initial publication in 1998, helped bring mindfulness to the mainstream. More recently, his book Wake Up Now was one of the first to offer a detailed road map to the journey of spiritual awakening. Since 2007 he has led an annual, months-long intensive program in spiritual transformation known as the School for Awakening.

Bodian studied English literature as an undergrad at Columbia University, with a minor in Asian Studies, and English literature and Asian language in graduate school at Stanford University. He began practicing Zen in 1969 while still in college and subsequently studied with Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and Taizan Maezumi Roshi, among others. He was ordained a Zen monk in 1974 and went on to become the director of training at the Zen Center of Los Angeles.
In 1982 he gave up being a monk to pursue psychology. Bodian began writing during this time and in 1984 became the editor-in-chief of the magazine Yoga Journal, a post he held for 10 years. He is currently a contributing editor of The Buddhist Review. His writing has gained him a larger presence, Meditation for Dummies has sold 125,000 copies and has been printed in English, Dutch, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, and French. His latest book is Wake Up Now.
