Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay

Former UN High Commissioner and human rights advocate Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay was invited to Erasmus University Rotterdam in recognition of her lifelong fight against inequality, injustice, and the violence perpetrated against vulnerable groups. In her lecture on Thursday 9 June 2016, Navi Pillay addressed challenges regarding the current refugee crisis.

On this occasion she received an honorary doctorate in recognition of her significant contributions to the human rights field, both in her native country, South Africa, and internationally.

In South Africa, Navi Pillay defended anti-apartheid activists, fought for better prison conditions for political activists, and has done important work to protect women against domestic violence. Navanethem "Navi" Pillay (born 23 September 1941) is a South African jurist who served as the United NationsHigh Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.[1] A South African of IndianTamil origin, Pillay was the first non-white woman judge of the High Court of South Africa.[2] She has also served as a judge of the International Criminal Court and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.[2] Her four-year term as High Commissioner for Human Rights began on 1 September 2008[1] and was extended an additional two years in 2012.[3] In September 2014 Prince Zeid bin Ra'ad succeeded her in her position as High Commissioner for Human Rights.[4] In April 2015, Pillay became the 16th Commissioner of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty.[5] She is also one of the 25 leading figures on the Information and Democracy Commission launched by Reporters Without Borders.[6]

Biography

Navi Pillay (South Africa) served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.  She is currently serving as Judge Ad Hoc of the International Court of Justice in the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (The Gambia v Myanmar).  She is also the President of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty based in Madrid, the President of the Advisory Council of the International Nuremburg Principles Academy and the Chair of the Quasi-Judicial Inquiry into Detention in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.  In 1995, after the end of apartheid, Pillay was appointed acting judge on the South African High Court, and in the same year was elected by the UN General Assembly to be judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she served a total of eight years (1999-2003), the last four as President.  In 2003, she was appointed as a judge on the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where she served on the Appeals Chamber until 2008. &nb
