Edward FrancisCharlton, AM (31 October 1929 – 7 November 2004) was an Australian professional snooker and billiards player.[2] He remains the only player to have been world championship runner-up in both snooker and billiards without winning either title. He later became a successful marketer of sporting goods, launching a popular brand of billiard room equipment bearing his name.
Early life
Charlton was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia and came from a sporting family. His grandfather ran a billiards club in Swansea, New South Wales, and Charlton began playing cue sports when he was nine years old.[3] At the age of eleven, he defeated fellow Australian Walter Lindrum in a wartime snooker exhibition match,[3] and he made his first century break when he was seventeen.[4]

Eddie Charlton was born in Merewether, New South Wales, and came from a sporting family. His brother Jim was also a professional snooker player but never joined the world ranks. Eddie himself was a senior grade footballer, a champion surfer, a good cricketer and boxer.
Learning to play billiards at the age of nine, Charlton made his first public show against the great Walter Lindrum at the age of 11. He made his first 100 break in billiards at 15 and in snooker at 17. His career highest break was 147.
Having been a coal miner, he became a professional snooker player in 1963 at the age of 34 and the following season he won the Australian Professional Championship, a title which he went on to win, with one exception, every year for the next 20. Charlton was the most successful snooker player ever to come out of Australia. He was ranked number three in the world for five consecutive seasons from 1976/77, the first year of the rankings, though surprisingly he never won a ranking tournament (in those first few seasons only the World Championship counted). Eddie Charlton (born 11 July 1988 in Nottingham) is a professional squash player who represents England. He reached a career-high world ranking of World No. 50 in April 2015. He coaches Sara Thomas.[1][2]
Currently the head pro at the Toledo Club. Previously the head pro at University Club of Chicago. Eddie loves the community atmosphere of the sport.[3][4]
