Carnegie Hall Names Executive/Artistic Director

Carnegie Hall has appointed Clive Gillinson as executive and artistic director, effective July 1, 2005. Gillinson, who has been with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) for 34 years, will replace the late Robert Harth, who died suddenly in January.

Gillinson served as the LSO’s managing director for the past 20 years. Before that, he played as a cellist in the musician-owned and –operated orchestra for 14 years. He will stay at the LSO through the end of its centenary celebration in June 2005. In the meantime, Klaus Jacobs, Carnegie Hall’s vice chairman and treasurer, will continue to serve as acting executive director.

The 58-year-old Gillinson was born in Bangalore, India. He studied mathematics at London University and earned a recital diploma from the Royal Academy of Music, where he also won the school’s top prize for cellists. Sir Clive Gillinson was born in India in 1946 and began studying the cello at the age of 11, playing with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where he won the top cello prize, and then went on to become a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Under Gillinson’s leadership, the London Symphony Orchestra initiated some of the city’s most successful artistic festivals, established an annual residency in New York from 1997 and was a founding partner in the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. Gillinson also developed the LSO Discovery music education programme and created LSO St. Luke’s, its music education centre, and LSO Live, the orchestra's award-winning international recording label.

Gillinson served as Chairman of the Association of British Orchestras; was one of the founding Trustees of the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts; and was founding Chairman of the Management Committee of the Clore Leadership Programme.

Sir Clive Daniel Gillinson, CBE (born 7 March 1946)[1] is a British cellist and arts administrator. He is best known for his long tenure as the managing director of the London Symphony Orchestra and his current position as executive and artistic director of Carnegie Hall.

Early life

Gillinson was born in Bangalore, India. His mother was a professional cellist and his father, a businessman, also wrote and painted. Gillinson began studying the cello at the age of eleven and played in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. He was educated at Frensham Heights School in Surrey. He went to the University of London to study mathematics, but realizing that he wanted to make music his life, entered the Royal Academy of Music, where he gained a Recital Diploma and won the top cello prize. After attending the Royal Academy of Music, he became a member of London's Philharmonia Orchestra.
