Antwone Fisher Speaker Biography
Antwone Fisher was born in prison to a teenaged mother. He became a ward of the state of Ohio and was placed in foster care immediately. He spent two years in a loving foster home, but when it was apparent that the foster mother had become too attached to Fisher, deeming a reunion with his birth mother too difficult for the child, he was placed in a foster home where he would suffer twelve years of abuse at the hands of the foster family. He survived the cruelties of foster care and the brutalities of homelessness and set on a course of healing after joining the United States Navy where he served his country for eleven years.
Fisher works in Hollywood as a director, screenwriter, inspirational speaker, author and film producer and is author of The New York Times bestseller Finding Fish a Memoir, the inspiring story of his incredible life's journey. Born in an Ohio prison to a teenage mother, Antwone became a ward of the state and was placed in foster care. He lived two years in a caring foster home but was removed and suffered twelve years of abuse at the hands of his new foster family. Unable to land another home for him, at age 14, he was relocated to a penal institution for teenaged boys in western Pennsylvania where he remained until he graduated high school at 17. Emancipated from foster care, he found himself in the world alone and homeless, living on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio.
Antwone set on a path of healing when he entered the United States Navy, where he served his country for eleven years; nine years at sea, two ashore, four deployments and one forward deployment duty, stationed aboard the USS St. Louis LKA 116. Antwone Quenton Fisher (born August 3, 1959) is an American director, screenwriter, author, and film producer. His 2001 autobiographical book Finding Fish was a New York Times Best Seller. The 2002 film Antwone Fisher was written by Fisher and directed by Denzel Washington.
Early life and education
Fisher was born in prison to 17-year-old single mother Eva Mae Fisher. His father, 23-year-old Edward Elkins, had been shot dead by a jealous girlfriend two months earlier.
