Mish Michaels and Blue Hill Observatory: Our Tribute to an Extraordinary Community Leader
Mish Michaels came into our lives over twenty years ago at a time when Blue Hill Observatory was beginning to establish a nonprofit scientific education center focused on weather and climate programming. From that moment on, Mish’s involvement with, and support of, the Observatory never waned. She affectionately called the organization “my little Observatory.”
Our relationship began with Mish as a full-time on-air meteorologist forecasting the weather for metro-Boston and taking courses at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education in order to expand her knowledge of STEM education for youth—a subject she was most passionate about. An authentic leader she did not perceive her scientific training at Cornell University would be enough to have an impact in K-12 education. BOSTON (CBS) - We are incredibly sad to report the loss of a member of our WBZ family. Mish Michaels, who was part of our weather team for 7 years, has passed away.
Mish was a friendly, reliable, curious meteorologist who loved science. She began forecasting weather in the 1990s and joined us here at WBZ in 2001. Mish chased tornadoes, flew into hurricanes, and brightened our lives - always sharing her enthusiasm for science and weather.
To us, she was a friend. But Mish was so much more. In a statement posted on Facebook, Mish's husband called her a devoted mother, wife, daughter, auntie, friend, and stellar equestrian.
Mish had the ability to brighten up every room she entered, and we at WBZ are sending her family our love.
In the words of Mish's friend and colleague, WBZ-TV Executive Weather Producer Terry Eliasen:
For the first time in my 20 years at WBZ, I sit at my keyboard not knowing what to write. I feel like I could type a 1,000 page novel but yet I have no words. It seems anything I say about Mish Michaels just isn't enough. For those that didn't know her, I fe

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Mish Michaels. Our family is devastated by her loss. She was a devoted mother, wife, daughter, auntie, friend and stellar equestrian, as well as an award-winning broadcast meteorologist and environmental reporter,” the family’s spokeswoman stated.
“Mish had the ability to brighten up every room she entered. Her professional success was monumental, but so was her commitment to helping others through her philanthropic work. We are asking that our family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time. Thank you for your love and support. Funeral arrangements will be announced,” the spokesman added.
Michaels started her career in New Hampshire and jumped to Boston, where she did stints with WHDH-TV and WBZ-TV. She also worked at The Weather Channel. She lived in Wellesley.
Her job at the local PBS station, WGBH, ended almost as soon as it beg
