Harry Gordon Selfridge (1858-1947)

He was born at Ripon, Wisconsin, and brought up in Jackson, Michigan. At the end of the Civil War his father never returned home (he was later convicted as a con-man in Missouri), his two brothers died, and his mother struggled to make ends meet. Having worked part-time from the age of ten, he quit school at fourteen to work in a bank. He failed his exams to enter the U.S. Navy School at Annapolis and in 1876 an ex-employer agreed to provide him with a letter of introduction to Marshall Field, senior partner in one of Chicago's largest stores. He worked his way up from stock boy to junior partner during which time he was the first to promote Christmas sales with the phrase: "Only 'x' Shopping Days Until Christmas". When Field refused him a partnership, in 1904 he opened his own department store, Harry G. Selfridge & Co., in Chicago, but sold it just two months later for a substantial profit which allowed him to retire more than comfortably. Harry Gordon Selfridge, Sr. (11 January 1858 – 8 May 1947)[1][3] was an American retail magnate who founded the London-based department storeSelfridges. The early years of his leadership of Selfridges led to his becoming one of the most respected and wealthy retail magnates in the United Kingdom. He was known as the 'Earl of Oxford Street'.[4]

Born in Ripon, Wisconsin, and raised in Jackson, Michigan, Selfridge delivered newspapers and left school at 14 when he found work at a local bank. Selfridge eventually obtained a stock boy position at Marshall Field's department store in Chicago, where over the next 25 years, he rose to become a partner. In 1890, he married the wealthy Rose Buckingham who was from a prominent Chicago family.

In 1906, following a trip to London, Selfridge invested £400,000 to build a new department store in what was then the unfashionable western end of Oxford Street. Selfridges opened to the public on 15 March 1909, and Selfridge remained chairman until 1941.

Mr Selfridge is a British period drama television series about Harry Gordon Selfridge and his department store, Selfridge & Co, in London, set from 1908 to 1928. It was co-produced by ITV Studios and Masterpiece/WGBH[1] for broadcast on ITV. The series began broadcasting on ITV on 6 January 2013 and 30 March 2016 on PBS in the United States.

It was announced on 24 May 2011 that ITV was in discussions with ITV Studios about developing an adaptation of Lindy Woodhead's biography Shopping, Seduction & Mr Selfridge.[2]Andrew Davies was confirmed to be working on the script.[2] Beginning in London in 1908, during a time period when women were enjoying an ever-increasing amount of freedom, it tells the story of Harry Gordon Selfridge, the founder of Selfridges department store and includes members of his family, particularly his wife Rose Selfridge.
