Ian Callum, RDI - Design Director, Jaguar
Ian Callum, RDI, Jaguar Director of Design, was born in Dumfries, Scotland. Ian attended a course in Industrial Design at Glasgow School of Art which was followed by a 2‑year course in Automobile Design at the Royal College of Art.
Ian spent the first 12 years of his career working in Ford Design studios, where he contributed to the creation of the Escort RS Cosworth and the Ghia Via Concept. Later, as Chief Designer of TWR Design, he was responsible for the Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish.
Ian joined Jaguar in 1999 but continued to manage Aston Martin Design, developing the DB9 as well as directing Jaguar Design where he and his team created, amongst others, the R‑Coupe, RD‑6, C‑X75 and C‑X17 concepts. Heralding an exciting new era for the brand, each of his cars takes the design theme further and continues to reinforce Jaguar as a creator of 'fast, beautiful cars.' Last July, Ian Callum left his position as head of design for Jaguar and handed over to Julian Thomson. We look back on his career as his latest design – the sensitively updated F-Type – is launched.
In 1999, Jaguar was dealt a blow with the sudden death of Geoff Lawson, a very likeable character and a cheerful and talented man, who, as head of design for the venerable British car maker, had managed its transition from the classical era into the new millennium.
To take his place, Jaguar’s management called on Ian Callum, a Scottish designer who was then 45 years old.
Born in 1954, Callum was a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London. He began his career at Ford in 1979. At the time, the American group was just embarking on its expansion and increasing its prestige through the acquisition of new brands. In August 1970, the Ford Motor Company announced that it was buying 84% of the shares in Ghia, Vignale and De Tomaso from Rowan Industries. Three years later, Ford

Ian Stuart Callum (born 30 July 1954) is a British car designer who has worked for Ford, TWR, and Aston Martin. In 1999 he became the Director of Design for Jaguar Cars, later Jaguar Land Rover, a position he held until mid 2019.
In 2019, Callum founded his own automotive and product design company, named Callum.
Background
Callum was born in Dumfries, Scotland,[1] in 1954. In 1968 (at the age of 14) he submitted a car design to Jaguar in the hope of landing a job.[1] Callum studied at Lanchester Polytechnic's (now Coventry University) School of Transportation Design in Coventry, Aberdeen Art College and the Glasgow School of Art, where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Design. He subsequently graduated from the Royal College of Art in London with a post-graduate master's degree in Vehicle Design.
Callum's younger brother Moray was Vice President of Design at Ford until his retirement in 2021.
