Local Artist Finds Footing Amid National Spotlight

Though he’s a known figure in the Los Angeles and Nashville music circuits, Sean Patrick McGraw has deep roots in Chautauqua County.

Now a national recording artist, McGraw has performed across the country with several country superstars and made an appearance on late-night television. Having left the area to pursue his dream of making it in the music business shortly after his graduation from high school, his musical journey has always been arduous and tenuous, but has certainly yielded its own unique dividends along the way.

The following is an abbreviated transcription of an interview between The Post-Journal and McGraw in an effort to chronicle and highlight the latter’s lengthy and productive career as a singer-songwriter in an unforgiving industry:

P-J: For more than a decade, practically everyone in Chautauqua County and the surrounding area has been familiar with the name “Sean Patrick McGraw.” It’s been a long journey for you, but where did it begin and when did music become such a passio

Hello friends! I wanted to give you a little musical article and share my tastes. And right away, the first musical style I wanted to tackle was country music! Country music is one of my favorite musical styles, and it’s a must-see style in the United States.

I like the country because it is the right spirit, that it sounds really well and you can often dance to it! We’re not in a real dance demonstration; we’re in a sharing moment where nobody judges anybody.

As for my country preferences, I am more sensitive to the “happy” country than to ” sad ” country, although there are some very nice country walks… I listen to country because it makes me smile. I also prefer the voices of men, the more serious timbres or with this very pronounced accent that gives the impression that one sings by the nose.

My preferences are inevitably reflected in my ranking, which is, therefore, a ranking based solely on my tastes. The ranking consists mainly (except an artist, I let you discover which one ), of the current country and is realized in rand

Amid the two-day mainstream country, bluegrass, folk, roots rock and alt-country bonanza that was the third annual Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, the unlikely last-minute addition of Sean Patrick McGraw ("Not related to Tim, so I didn't pull any strings to be here") to The Mane Stage line-up proved a surprise high point of the weekend. "Letting his freak flag fly" with the psychobilly swagger of a true country rocker, McGraw caught the attention of the record-setting crowd, industry insiders, and media heavyweights alike.

According to August Brown of the Los Angeles Times, "His early contender of a hit, ‘A Dollar Ain't Worth a Dime,’ is one of the first of what will surely be many recession-themed laments, but unlike John Rich's ‘Shutting Detroit Down,’ McGraw keeps his sociology enticingly vague, warning that ‘People do desperate things in desperate times/ if a man don't turn to Jesus, he'll turn to crime,’ but it doesn't feel like Christian proselytizing -- more an acknowledgment that neither course of action is likely to help in the long run."
