General Mark Milley

General (Ret.) Mark A. Milley served as the 20th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation's highest-ranking military officer, and the principal military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council. He retired Sept. 29th, 2023. Prior to becoming Chairman on October 1st, 2019, General Milley served as the 39th Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. General Milley is currently a distinguished fellow in residence with the Security Studies Program in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a Charles and Marie Robertson visiting professor and visiting lecturer at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA).

As the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff since October 2019, Gen. Mark A. Milley is the nation’s highest-ranking military officer. 

Milley, who is also the principal military advisor to President Joe Biden, has served in the military for more than 42 years and has a long combat history. 

Yet, postsonsocial media falsely claimed Milley “never served in combat and never won a war.”

“Can someone explain to me how a man who never served in combat and never won a war has THIS many medals on his uniform,” journalist Jordan Schachtel questioned in a tweet that shows Milley with numerous military decorations.

Mark A. Milley graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor’s in Political Science in 1980, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Armor in the U.S. Army through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Milley has had multiple command and staff positions in seven divisions and in Special Forces over the last 32 years.

Assignments

His initial assignment was as Assistant Battalion Maintenance officer; later Platoon Leader, A Company, 4th Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, 18th Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, NC, and later the 5th Special Forces Group, also at Fort Bragg. He then attended the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, after which he was reassigned to a Combat Support Brigade, 7th Infantry Division (Light) at Fort Ord, CA, where he served as Assistant S3 (Operations), commanded two light infantry companies, and was the Battalion S3 in the 5th Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division (Light), Fort Ord.
