Janaki Lenin was a film-maker for more than a decade. After six years of editing advertising commercials and soap operas, she was desperate for a change of direction. Getting involved with Romulus Whitaker opened up exciting avenues. Together, they founded Draco Films and produced over twenty documentary films for National Geographic Television and other channels. Their first collaboration, King Cobra, won an Emmy.
She was the Regional Chair of the IUCN/SSC Crocodile Specialist Group for South Asia and Iran. In 2004, she expanded the scope of her work to include mammals. She facilitated a working group of primatologists which drafted a National Action Plan for nuisance primates. With Professor R. Sukumar, she authored an action plan for the mitigation of human-elephant conflict in India with funding from US Fish and Wildlife Service. She set up Draco Books to co-publish Snakes of India: The Field Guide by Romulus Whitaker and Ashok Captain in 2004.
Janaki spends her time doing what she loves best—writing. She writes about wildlife and conservation. Her first book, A K I’m the author of A King Cobra’s Summer (2010), My Husband and Other Animals (2012), My Husband and Other Animals 2 – The Wildlife Adventure Continues, (2014) and Every Creature Has A Story (2020). I co-wrote the first volume of my husband Romulus Whitaker’s autobiography, Snakes, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll, to be released in January 2024. I facilitated the drafting of a management plan for non-human primates living with humans in 2005. With Professor R. Sukumar, I wrote the Action Plan for the Mitigation of Elephant-Human Conflict in India and contributed to the Guidelines for Human-Leopard Conflict Management. Between 2008 and 2012, I was the Regional Chair for the IUCN/SSC/Crocodile Specialist Group (South Asia and Iran), Executive Secretary of the Gharial Conservation Alliance, and a member of IUCN’s Theme on the Social and Environmental Accountability of the Private Sector. As a film editor, I worked on numerous soaps and commercials. I set up Draco Films, a wildlife film production company, with Rom Whitaker. A filmmaker for over a decade, Janaki Lenin founded Draco Films (along with Romulus Whitaker) and produced more than a dozen films for National Geographic Television.
Currently, Janaki finds herself forging a new identity as a book publisher and writer. Her focus, as publisher, is mainly on producing world-class field guides to the fauna of India and making them available in 15 Indian languages at subsidized prices.
She has written on a wide range of wildlife and conservation subjects for national newspapers, wildlife and travel magazines.
She facilitates a working group of primatologists which drafted a national Action Plan for nuisance primates. She is also drafting an action plan for the mitigation of human-elephant conflict in India in collaboration with Asian Nature Conservation Foundation, Bangalore.
